OBJECTS AS HISTORY

3 February 2020/Class 5/Ms.Malvika Mahidhar

We looked at Egypt as a civilization and discussed what some of the objects and artifacts found there might have meant to the people.

It shows the scales which might mean some sort of measurement is being carried out, since Egyptian worshipped anthropomorphic deities, the figures shown are gods.

According to Egyptian Myths when a person dies, Anubis, the god of death takes him to a trial, where the person’s heart is put on a scale against the feather of truth. If the heart weighs out the feather, the person goes to a good place, if not then torture for the rest of their eternal life.

Since Egyptians were pagans, they worshipped a mother goddess and we looked at few pictures of those statues. They were kept and worshipped for fertility for both humans and the crops they cultivated.

We moved onto pots with intricate decoration and one of the first ones to have holes on their edges, which might provide the use for slipping ropes between them to aid in carrying them.

We saw Narmar palettes which were carved out of stone to use as a makeup palette. This indicates two things, stones were used by kings too because of its abundance and chemicals and pigments were used to make items of grooming.

We talked about how pyramids involved different sorts of manpower (architects, mathematicians, laborers, slaves, livestock). They were also made from bricks brought in from different regions.

We moved onto discussing the Rosetta Stone, which apparently is a huge deal. It has information about Tax evasion written on it in three different scripts, Hieroglyphs, demotic (used by common folk) and Greek. It helped establish that Greeks had influences over Egypt.
