OBJECTS AS HISTORY

6 January 2020\Class 1\Ms.Malvika Mahidar

The aim of the subject is to study history from a different perspective or as the name suggests learning about objects(artifacts) from the past and looking at the story behind each of them.

The class started with a discussion about how one would describe an ‘object’. After multiple inputs, we came to a set of associated words which would describe an object (utility, man-made, invented). We also included the word ‘artifact’ and then differentiated these two words.

An Artifact would be an object which has no use now but had some utility once and is merely used to study the past (a family heirloom, jewelry, was considered an exception).

We moved onto the stone age and talked about how the people’s lifestyle was during that period. Their tools, paintings, caves , the hunter-gatherer dynamic and use of animal skins in their daily life.

Jericho, one of the prominent excavation sites for studying settlements.

I am personally neutral towards History as a subject. I know it is important to preserve and know about our culture but the amount of resources we use to excavate tombs and preserve some fossils could be better channeled into helping out those in need. I suppose we still can learn from history because it tends to repeat itself and I guess it helps to prevent things from happening.
