Ship of Theseus. Ships in those times were referred to as ‘she’ since they had nurturing nature and carried it’s crew over distances. Battle ships were referred to as Man o’ wars because of their violent nature. The point here being we associate a persona to things around us and give them names and characters to breath life into them. The same goes for the ship, a cardboard box can be the ship if I call it SS. Cardboard box and decide to sail in it. We did bring up the question of a human body too what happens if we transplant all organs, is it still the same person or is it someone else.
The functionality is what keeps something true to its core. We have been breaking down elements and part of design down to their building blocks and it is important that we realize what makes an object or an idea what it is at its core. I believe design is addressing need and to fulfill that the core functionality of something which needs to be preserved an kept in mind whenever something new is made or a change is being done to an already existing model.
