13 March 2020/Class 10/Mr.Jai Ranjit
It was slightly difficult to move away from high quality videos and flashy camera angles and go to the old times (1966-80) and watch what I assumed would be bland stories and over dramatic characters. The stark contrast between what I get to watch today in the name of Bollywood and the movies made before, was stunning.
Not to sugarcoat it, these movies were not the ones which blow your socks off. The reason I liked them was how effectively they told simple stories.
Sholay
So many elements in the movie to cover. We looked at perspectives as one, Gabbar and Jai-Veeru both being outlaws, had different ideologies, code of conduct and how they dealt with people around them
Chitchor
A drama revolving around mindsets of parents regarding marriage (which more or less still hasn’t changed a lot). It highlights elements of status symbols in a society, how women despite are forced into marriage without their consent and are expected to acquire house managing skills before education. Geeta sticks out due to her carefree nature. with the importance of music in the film it almost seemed like a Disney Musical with characters dropping songs which moved the story along or depicted their feelings very well. The run time being short it tells the story beautifully and ends on a happy note.
“Mai aapki Beti nai, Beta hoon”
“Khana banana sikha do”
“Ladka to bohot accha hai”

Griha Pravesh
So many narratives in this film, apart from the obvious Griha ‘Home’, which justifies the slow pacing of the movie. The protagonist who lives in Mumbai, sames the same problem people do today, looking for house. They have the idea of an idealistic house which is challenged at the end of the movie when the house they have rented is painted with bright new colours, signifying that they have been living in the house they want all this time without realizing it. The film also talk about relationships and people grow far apart even if they are physically together. Mansi (the protagonist, Amar’s wife who is involved with another woman) reacts in an unusual way on hearing the news. She brings Sapna, to waht can be called her home territory and makes Amar realize what he actually is without the tie, coat and perfume she sprays on him.
“…saath saath rehte hue sirf pass pass reh jaate hain. Bistar par pass rahenge saath nai.”
“…jo hum nai jaante hai ki wo jaanta hai”
“…soch ki umar tunmse zyada hai”
“Nakami aadmi ko philosopher bana deti hai”
