Icons have been used since ancient times to depict and denote a meaning or message. Even now icons are found everywhere from washroom signs to our smartphones.
Through iconography, the study of icons and the meaning behind them, icons and symbols on statues can be interpreted. Before idol worship in Buddhism, people worshiped icons like the Dharma Chakra, swastika.
Since it was difficult to portray Vishnu with all his signature weapons in the pose he is in in the picture above, the sculptor included icons around him to show these objects, a conch, chakra, serpent to convey this form of Vishnu.
We were assigned objects from Greece in the last class[Absent] and were told to interpret the meaning behind icons/symbols on them.
