STUDIO II

26 February 2020/Class 8/ Ms.Prarthana Patil

Calvino breathed life into his cities all 55 of them even if they turned out that he was talking about a single one all along.

Concentric

We went though 5 of his cities and made 15 drawings. That was the stimuli it gave us to spark a thought and to personify the cities. We attempted to do the same and with our cities and breathed life into them with our composition. I learned the difference between drawing a place and imagining a city.

A city which stretches and gives one a sense of large space, big structures looming in the background and tiny details which further make the city look lively.

In the process of pairing up the cities for dates, I was surprised how I gave a personality to each city and thought of their backstory and life as a person.

I paired Depth and Dome.

Depth

Depth was this clean and beautiful tunnel which quite obviously showed depth. When other people saw the actual depth, I saw Chaos as it went spiralling down and Order coming from it. At the same time, it was showed everything that had in one view there were no hidden elements in it. As if the city accepted and its state and was proud of it, proud enough to keep it on display for everyone to see.

Dome starts off with these structured layers, the structures in these are waving off in different directions too. By the time your eyes go behind you notice it has gone all over the place and spiralled into all directions. It was as if it was crazy down there, but it was afraid to show it to people and actively tried to hide it.

Depth will help bring out the craziness in Dome.

We spend the rest of class using flashlights to make the cities even more lively and experience them in a different way.
