OBJECTS AS HISTORY

27 January 2020/Class 4/Ms. Malvika Mahidhar

Each group gave their presentation and were questioned by the faculty, about their objects and it’s history. We had kinship as an aspect to cover the history of Babylon. Each member selected a king and researched about an object connected to him.

I selected Nebuchadnezzar I of the 4th Dynasty of Babylon. The object connected to him was a Cunieform cylinder. These clay cylinders are inscribed with wooden styluses in Cunieform script in Akkadian. The insciptions on these cylinders talked about how great the king was and that the gods should shower him with luck. These cylinders were placed inside hollowed out spaces inside structures like temples, walls and buildings. These were not made for ‘mortal’ eyes to look at and were thus placed inside.

The object shows how much importance was given to the king and how they compared themselves to gods and beings of higher power which are to placed above the people they rule. The very fact that these cylinders are in large numbers and are usually found in structures while excavating means that the Kings asserted their dominance and made sure that they were considered different from the general population.
